📄 Cyclists & Motorbikes: Know the Law & Stay Safe | Carlos School of Motoring

Riding on the roads can feel like living in a real-life video game—except there are no extra lives, and pedestrians aren’t very forgiving. Whether you’re on two wheels pedalling away on a bike or revving a motorbike, the road has rules for everyone. And yes, that includes you, Mr. Lycra-clad cyclist, and you, Ms. Speedy Biker.
Cyclists: Pedal With a Plan
Signal, Signal, Signal! Hand signals aren’t just interpretive dance moves. Use them when turning left or right. It keeps drivers guessing less, and avoids surprise “Whoa, where’d that go?” moments.
Ride on the Road (Mostly) Pavements are for pedestrians. Bicycles on the pavement are like trying to sneak a tiger into a petting zoo—not a good idea.
Lights & Helmets Front and rear lights at night are a must, even if you think you look like a neon art installation. Helmets? Highly recommended unless you enjoy the "head vs tarmac" experience.
Obey Traffic Signs Stop at red lights, don’t go the wrong way on one-way streets, and avoid sneaky shortcuts that make drivers shout things you don’t want to hear.
Motorbikes: Not Just Cool, But Compliant
Filtering Motorbikes can filter between traffic in slow-moving jams. But remember, it’s legal only if safe. Don’t channel your inner stunt double.
Signals & Lane Discipline Just like cyclists, motorcyclists need to signal turns and lane changes. Yes, even when you think “everyone knows I’m turning.” They don’t.
Protective Gear Helmets, gloves, jackets… basically, anything that isn’t made of paper. You’ll thank yourself later when you avoid looking like a road rash Picasso.
Speed Limits Motorbikes may be fast, but the law isn’t impressed. Obey the limits, or you’ll quickly meet a “not-so-funny” reality check.
For Everyone Else (Including Drivers)
Respect cyclists and motorbikes. Give them space. Don’t try overtaking with 1 cm to spare—it’s not a race. Remember, they’re human beings, not traffic cones with attitude.
Takeaway:
Whether on pedals or a petrol engine, the golden rule is simple: follow the law, signal early, wear your gear, and laugh at the little bumps (but not literally—keep your hands on the handlebars!). Roads work best when everyone plays nice.
